What do you do when you have to go to a clinic that’s not Fear Free?  Whether you’re not our client and you stumbled on this blog for tips, or your pet is used to our Fearless care and your pet has to go to the ER or a specialist who is not Fear Free…we can help.

There are some basic steps that you can take to help keep your pet comfortable even when circumstances are not ideal.

Skip the lobby

Ask to wait in your car until they are ready for you – whether this is the specialist or the ER, ask if you can skip the crowded lobby.

For cats: bring a towel to cover their carrier so they can’t see any triggers on the way in.

Bring comfort items

Bring your pet’s bed or a blanket that smells like home.  Bring a yoga mat for them to stand on on the floor so they don’t slip.

Bring treats (or toys)

Does your pet have special dietary needs or treats that they find especially high-value?  Bring them with you!  Even if the clinic provides treats, there is no guarantee your pet will like what is on offer.  Is your pet getting a fasted procedure?  Bring a favorite toy instead!

Use pheromones

Keep species-specific calming pheromone sprays on hand at home, spray them on a bandanna (dogs) or in their carrier (cats) 15 minutes prior to leaving the house.

Ask for drugs

If this is a planned appointment, ask for anti-anxiety medications prior to the appointment.

If this is an emergency visit, or if your pet is stressed even on medications, ask for them to be sedated upon arrival.
